Dismissal Procedures

Arrival

Safety is a priority at J. Colin! Providing a safe and orderly environment for your child is a major goal of the entire staff at J. Colin English Elementary! We want to make sure that each child is safe and secure while they are on campus. Please help us achieve this goal by following these safety rules:

*When dropping students off in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon, parents should use the driveway located at the traffic light at the intersection of Pine Island Road and Piney Road to enter the campus. There are two lanes of traffic entering the campus. Use the lane closest to the school for dropping off and picking up students. Use the outside lane for through traffic, once students have been picked up or dropped off. Please do not park/leave your vehicle in the drop-off/pick-up lane. If you have school business, please park in the designated areas. Dropping your child off prior to 8:25 A.M. is a safety concern and may put your child at risk. Supervision for your child begins at 8:25 A.M.

Dismissal

Establishing a routine in the way a child is to go home is encouraged. Parents are requested to arrange the way a student will be going home in advance. Children are often easily confused when they have multiple ways of going home. If there is to be a change in dismissal procedures, written notification must be provided no later than the morning of the dismissal change, otherwise, your child will be sent home in the normal way. Early sign-outs - Recorded as Unexcused Absences If a student is to be picked up early, a note must be sent that morning to the teacher and the student will only be dismissed early for medical and/or family emergencies. Anyone other than a legal guardian picking up a child must be listed on the student’s emergency card and will be required to show proof of identity. At the end of the day, students will be dismissed with an adult escort and will meet families at the parent pick-up, walker/bike rider areas, or be delivered to the buses. No student shall be released before 2:45 pm of the school day unless the administration determines it is an emergency. Excessive early sign-outs will be addressed on a case-by-case basis to determine if there is a pattern of non-attendance. See District Attendance Policy 2.77. Thank you for your continued support in this matter.

Parent Pick-up Procedures

Parents are encouraged to begin lining up in the parent pick-up lanes beginning at 3:10 pm. To ensure that all children are safe, please adhere to the following procedures:

  1. Do not leave your vehicle. If you have business at J. Colin please park in the parking lot.

  2.  Display the JCE Student Name Card on your dashboard. These cards may be picked up in the front office.

  3. Students will be escorted to your car by JCE staff members. Please note special needs students should be dropped off and picked up from the handicapped parking area.

  4. A staff member will assist your child in entering or exiting your vehicle through the right rear door. Staff members are not permitted to restrain students in safety seats. Child restraint is the driver’s responsibility.

  5. The area directly behind the cafeteria is for maintenance and kitchen staff only. You will be asked to relocate to the parent pick-up lines or to park your vehicle in the front parking area.

Walkers and Bike Riders

If you have designated your child as a walker or bike rider, this means that your child has permission to leave campus and walk or ride a bike home at the end of the school day. Your child will be escorted by a staff member to the front gate east of the parking lot and released. Pre-K and kindergarten students will not be released unless parents or guardians are present. Bus Riders The mission of the Transportation Department is to provide the service of transporting students to and from school in a safe, caring, and disciplined environment, with students understanding the acceptable standards of conduct. Each principal/assistant principal is required to instruct all transported students twice a year on the following school bus rules and safety practices: School Board Policy 8.90, and SBER 6A-3.017.
